Former champion shares his experiences of how VR is evolving sim racing

We spoke to Kobayashi about why he started using VR for racing and his experiences with VR. Kobayashi is an amateur racer who has twice won the Roadster Cup series at Fuji Speedway, part of the Fuji Championship Race Series. After retiring from real-world racing, he started playing the online racing simulator iRacing, but found it difficult to drive as well as he wanted on the 2D screen. He then introduced a VR headset, which provided a more realistic experience and improved his performance.

Taking on the challenge of online racing: Why VR?
I have enjoyed amateur motorsports for many years, and during that time I have twice won the Roadster Cup series championship in the Fuji Championship Race Series held at Fuji Speedway.
After retiring from real-life racing, a friend encouraged him to start playing the online racing simulator iRacing .
Of course! I was confident!
Although I don't have experience in GT3 or big formula cars driven by professional drivers, I thought that an MX-5 would be able to achieve good results right away...even though it's mature, it's still a champion...

Unexpected obstacles: the difference between stereoscopic vision and 2D monitors
However, what a surprise...
I just can't drive the way I want to.
Why??
All my driving is based on real-life experience.
In the real world, there is acceleration (G) and three-dimensional scenery.
Did you know that humans see things in 3D due to the parallax between their eyes?
Try closing one eye and trying to touch or grab something. Does it miss or miss?
This is exactly what a 2D monitor is like. Of course, the sense of depth and distance is expressed through the rendering, but it is not the same as actual 3D vision.
Coming from real racing into the 2D world , I had a hard time adjusting.

The decision to introduce VR and its results
When I started SimRace , the first generation of consumer VR headsets were finally available for sale, so I decided to take the plunge and try VR .
And... this chart is true!

Virtual G-force sensation and new experiences
He was now able to drive with the same sense of distance as in real life, and his performance, which had been stagnant, began to improve.
VR at the time was low resolution and looked pretty terrible looking back, but it was still a game changer for me!
Even though G-forces don't exist in the virtual world, the sense of distance creates a sense of speed, creating a sensation similar to virtual G-forces .
It's been about six years since I first got my hands on VR . VR headsets have continued to evolve, and finally , Crystal has arrived. Driving with Crystal Light is truly virtual reality.
